SENATOR Jacqui Lambie (The Examiner, July 2) made a demand for a fair deal for Tasmania in relation to Bass Strait and the Renewable Energy Target.
Arguments, requests and even demands need to be based on fact and reason if they are to be successful.
Regrettably for Tasmania this new Senator has attacked the Commonwealth and the other states on a basis which lacks both fact and reason.
I support the claim for a fair deal for Tasmania, particularly in relation to Bass Strait and the RET, but such a demonstrably inaccurate basis as she set out is totally adverse to Tasmania’s case and helps to have it dismissed.
She asserted that the other states and the Commonwealth owe Tasmania special consideration because our workers are at risk just “because other state governments didn’t have the same statesmen and women who planned and built our magnificent clean and green Hydro energy system in the past”.
I agree that our Hydro is world class.
But don’t anyone be surprised if the other states and the Commonwealth are less than impressed by her claims of their lack of foresight.
It is surprising that she has not heard of the Snowy Hydro scheme in NSW.
Perhaps she could take a quick trip up the road from Canberra to Cooma to familiarise herself with “the Snowy” and while there she could check through Google to read up about the Barron Gorge hydro power station near Cairns and the others in Queensland, the Keiwa Hydro scheme in the Victorian highlands and the others in Victoria and then look up the Ord River Scheme and others in WA.
And if she checks South Australia she will find out that their lack of rain and mountains means that they have not been able to develop more than some small hydro power plants in the Adelaide hills.
Really Senator, it is not hard to find the facts.
Continual outbursts of unfounded claims and critical attacks on other governments and people do nothing to gain national respect for Tasmania and its special needs – in fact they enhance the belittling of our state and tend to confirm what one of her PUP team said recently – that we are a land of bogans.
Please Senator in the interests of all of us, settle down and do your homework.
– TONY BENNEWORTH, Launceston
